There are some people that come into your life and leave such an impact that it's clear you're better for having met them. For me, This beautiful lady is one of those people.
She learned of my work through a co-worker and reached out. We engaged through email and quickly hit it off. She's honest, sweet, funny, sassy and incredibly genuine. Her emails weren't overly polished but they were real and I found myself so easily engaging in something that felt more meaningful and less "businessy" right away.
The day finally came and it was her turn in the studio. She walked in with such enthusiasm but like everyone else once she arrived the nerves and anxiety seemed started rising up. The self-doubts. The nerves. The questioning of WHY she had said yes.
Through it all, we walked side by side. We planned the outfits and order of what we'd be shooting and how. I mixed a mimosa, turned up the music and sent her to the makeup chair with Christine. The nerves seemed to fade and that twinkle in her eye and enthusiasm returned.
Pretty soon I was guiding and directing her through the shoot and she was killing it. But I quickly realized and saw that though I LOVED what I was getting in the camera.. she wasn't seeing or feeling the same thing.
Needless to say- sometimes in these sessions it's far more emotional than one may realize. Regardless of how fun, exciting and wonderful the experience is... getting in front of that camera can still be overwhelming.
So in that moment- when my sweet new friend was ready to give up and believe that she could never look fabulous or gorgeous or beautiful in a photograph...
When she was ready to throw that towel in and continue to believe the lies of self-doubt that plague us all...
I sat the camera down.
Reached for her hand.
Looked into her eyes and spent a moment with her. As a friend. As a peer. Getting honest, sharing my heart. Reassuring her that she wasn't alone. That this could be done and it'd be my greatest honor to show her- all I see and and MORE.
My heart and passion behind my work is to encourage and empower and cause a shift- and true IMPACT to the lives of women Just like her.. and let's be real.. that's 99.9% of us if we are all 100% honest with ourselves!
So in that moment- the photographs weren't the most important piece of this. It was being there as her friend.
And in that moment I breathed a sigh of relief as she found the courage and strength to press on.
It's hard. It's not always easy. I've learned so much over the years in not only guiding and directing women and in what lighting and angles and compositions to use BUT in how to gently handle their hearts.
I knew when she walked away it hadn't been an easy day. I knew when she came back in that even if she could find one image of herself that she absolutely LOVED it'd be a win for us both... and you know what...
Not only did she return to see and witness just how captivating, beautiful, confident and gorgeous she is BUT she found not one but SIX portraits she loved. SIX she decided she wanted to take home and keep.
More than that- this is what she personally had to say:
"Tessa escorts you into her studio with a quiet grace and proceeds to reveal her magic through the lens. She is a force to be reckoned with and you don't even realize that your life is about to be changed until she sends you the "sneak peek." You are blown away, humbled, in awe, and--in my case-- weepy.
Her unparalleled talents begin to erode every negative thought or comment you've harbored for far too long.
Tessa truly does lift you up. Don't be afraid. Just breathe and let her guide you on an amazing journey. You'll be better for having taken the ride."
